Food Plot Equipment

Your food plot equipment needs will be determined by the size of your food plots, their location, and your budget.

Most food plot sizes range between half an acre and five acres. Any smaller than half an acre and the deer will quickly eat it out. If it is larger than five acres, it becomes expensive and time consuming.

If the food plot is located deep in the woods with poor road access, the equipment will be small and maneuverable.

Smaller equipment will be cheaper to purchase, maintain and operate.

Larger food plots with good access will allow the use of larger equipment.

Larger equipment is more costly to purchase, maintain and operate, however is more efficient on larger areas.

The choice will depend on the size of your intended food plot.

Most equipment falls into the category of:

  •  Tractor
  •  ATV

Tractor

A tractor is ideal for larger plots as they are fast and efficient.

A mid sized tractor is all that is needed and would be in the 30-50 horsepower range. The four wheel tractors are more stable especially on sloping ground.

  • Drawbar
  • Front end loader
  • Power take off [PTO]
  • Three point hitch
  • Back blade
  • Deep plow
  • Disk and harrows
  • Spreader
  • Planter
  • Towable mower

ATV

A very popular vehicle for small food plots is the all-terrain vehicle or ATV.

As they are so versatile and cheap to run, they have replaced pick-ups in most places and are great in narrow or tight spots.

It is wise to get a four-wheel-drive option as some of the implements that are towed present some resistance.

As a result of their popularity, there has been an explosion of atv food plot accessories that includes:

  • Disk/plow
  • Plow
  • Spreader
  • Sprayer
  • Harrow
  • Seeder
  • Cultipacker
  • Snow plow

Ultimately the choice of equipment will be based on plot size and budget.
